At the opening ceremony, the Symposium was greeted by the mayor of Cagliari.
Besides basic studies in the field of SHS, much attention at the Symposium sessions was given to practical implementations of SHS.
In his plenary lecture, Prof. J.J. Moore (USA) talked about various applications of SHS, including in-space fabrication and repair. Prof. M. Tokita (Japan) analyzed recent trends in spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology and advanced systems. Prof. À.S. Rogachev (in co-authorship with T. Weihs, USA, and J.-C. Gachon, France) overviewed recent advances in SHS of multilayered nanofilms.
The plenary lecture by Prof. T. Ohji (Japan) was devoted to the synthesis and application of ceramics with a hyper-organized structure. E. Gutmanas and
I. Gotman (Israel) overviewed the reactive synthesis and application of dense composites. In his plenary lecture, Prof. S. Kharatyan (Armenia) talked about application of electrothermography to kinetic studies of SHS reactions.
After his scheduled presentation, Prof. O. Odawara (Japan) informed that the space-related studies on SHS have recently been financially supported by the Japanese Agency for Science and Technology. Great expectations were associated with the applications of SHS in medicine and biology (speakers from Israel, Spain, Russia).
Prof. A.G. Merzhanov organized a vivid round-table discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of SHS. Among participants of the discussion were
A. Mukasyan (USA), G. Cao (Italy), J. Puszynski (USA), Y. Miyamoto (Japan), Yu.M. Maksimov (Russia), V.V. Evstigneev (Russia), A.P. Amosov (Russia),
