In memoriam...
Prof. Włodzimierz
WALCZAK
21/03/1937 – 14/08/2012
Włodzimierz Walczak graduated from the Gdansk University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in 1961, and at the same year he started his work as an assistant at the Department of Welding.
He got his Doctoral degree at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Gdansk University of Technology in 1968. His doctoral thesis was devoted to the influence of collision angle and amount of explosive on the character of explosive welding in the steel–copper pair and seam quality.
In 1978, Włodzimierz Walczak continued his research at the Faculty of Mechanics, Warsaw University of Technology, on high-strength explosive welding, making habilitation (associate professor). In August 1991, he got a position of professor at the Gdansk University of Technology and in 2002, the official rank of full professor.
During his career, Professor Walczak had been working in the following important positions:
1979–1985
Director, Institute of Materials Technology and Welding Machines, Gdansk University of Technology
1987–1988
Dean, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Gdansk University of Technology
1999–2002
Dean, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Gdansk University of Technology
He had been heading the Department of Materials Technology and Welding Machines, Gdansk University of Technology until 2007.
He authored 90 scientific and technical papers, five books, three manuscripts, and 140 journal publications, most of which being dedicated to research and development of explosive cladding technology. He took active part in professional training of young researchers in the field of explosive welding, and supervised six doctoral and countless number of magister dissertations.
For many generations of Polish scientists and engineers active in the field of explosive welding, Professor Włodzimierz Walczak has been true authority in the issues of trade. For a small group who closely worked with him, he had also been a wise friend and mentor.

In memoriam...
Prof. Yury Aleksandrovich GORDOPOLOV
Director ISMAN 2004–2012
12/12/1948 - 14/06/2012
Having graduated from Moscow Physicotechnical Institute, young Gordopolov began his research work at the Institute of Chemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1973 and got his Cand. Sci. degree in 1977, under supervision of Prof. A.N. Dremin.
His wide range of interests included the behavior of metals in conditions of shock loading and high-speed impact. In the end of the 80s, Yury Aleksandrovich initiated his studies on the influence of shock loading on SHS reactions and on the possibility of solid state detonation. Gordopolov has got his D.Sc. degree in 1991 and the academic title of professor in 1994.
Prof. Gordopolov is the author of 140 scientific and technical papers printed in Russia and abroad. He supervised research work of numerous graduate and post-graduate students.
Prof. Gordopolov was a dedicated scientist who did much in promoting research and development in the field of explosion-assisted synthesis and modification of materials.
In the 2000s, it was Yury Gordopolov who resumed the tradition of regular international forums on shock waves—such as High-Energy-Rate Fabrication (HERF), Shock-Wave and High-Strain-Rate Phenomena (EXPLOMET), and International Symposia in Czechoslovakia—and organized, in continuation of this tradition, the VIII International Symposium on Application of Explosion to Preparation of New Materials (Moscow, 2006), first in the EPNM series.
Prof. Gordopolov passed away too early, after serious and painful disease. He attentively watched and coordinated our preparations to the last, XI EPNM Symposium in Strasburg from hospital and was much pleased by its success. Unfortunately, the disease was merciless…
Although he is gone, his work will endure for a long time to come. Those of us who were fortunate to be his co-workers and friends will always have a place in our hearts for him.
