About Coimbra
Coimbra is a city located in the heart of Portugal 40 km from the Figueira da Foz beach on the Atlantic shore, 200 km north of Lisbon, and 110 km south of Porto.
Coimbra used to be the first capital of Portugal. It has a long and rich history. Nowadays, Coimbra is an important industrial and economic center which is also regarded by Portuguese people as a capital of arts and science.
The University of Coimbra (founded in 1290) remained to be the only one in Portugal until the 16-th century. Coimbra is called students’ city because one third of city inhabitants are working in and for the university.
Coimbra is the largest city of the district of Coimbra. It comprises three parts: the Centro region, the Baixo Mondego subregion, and Alta (Old) city with most important administrative and historical premises
