How to get to Coimbra

 

Plane
To travel to Coimbra you should fly either to Lisboa or to Porto and then take a train or a bus. The International Airports of Lisbon and Porto have regular scheduled flights to and from all main European destinations as well as major world cities.

 

Trains and Buses

From Lisbon
You can get to Coimbra by train from the main station of "Lisboa-Oriente" - you can arrive there from the airport by bus, metro (viva viagem card + trip= 2,10€) or taxi (around 10€). The trip from Lisbon to "Coimbra-B" station takes under 2 hours if you take the "Alfa Pendular" (32,80€ 1st class / 22,80€ 2nd class) or the "Intercidades" (24,30€ 1st class / 19,20€ 2nd class) train.

From Oporto
The trains leave "Porto-Campanhã" station - you can get there from the airport by taxi (around 30€) or metro (andante card + trip= 2,45€)- use the direct violet metro line from the Sá Carneiro Airport – Z4 code). The trip from Porto to "Coimbra-B" station takes under 1 hour if you take the "Alfa Pendular" (21,70€ 1st class / 16,70€ 2nd class) or the "Intercidades" (17,20€ 1st class / 13,20€ 2nd class) train.

By Car
Portugal has a good network of motorways/freeways. You can rent a car at the airport or at any train station as well as in all major cities.
By car, from the north (Porto) - Recommended exit from A1: Take exit 13 to merge onto E801/IP3 toward Viseu/Coimbra Norte. Follow IC2 toward Coimbra/Lisboa and take the exit toward Coimbra Centro/Coimbra Este.
By car, from the south (Lisbon) - Recommended exit from A1: Take exit 12 for N341 toward Coimbra Sul/Taveiro/Alfarelos. Follow IC2 to Coimbra heading to IP3/Porto/Coimbra Norte/Viseu.

 

Getting to the Conference Venue

The University of Coimbra has 3 polos scattered around the city. The conference venue will be at Polo I.
Polo I is served by two city buses: line 28 (Universidade - Bairro do Ingote) and line 34 (Universidade - Polo II) which connects Polo I and Polo II of the university. Line 28 is the most convenient whenever you are in the city center (downtown) and it has stops near the railway station Coimbra B (Estação Velha). The main campus of the University of Coimbra, Polo I, is also served by other buses that do not go through the main campus itself, but stop at "Arcos do Jardim" which is 2 minutes away (walking) from the Physics Department.
